Now that the weather is getting warmer it's the perfect time to be outside and carry out some essential maintenance on your property. The exterior of your home often gets left over the winter, but it's important to get this work done before any issues become more serious.

Check your gutters
Check along your gutters and drainage pipes for any leaks or loose sections. Damaged pipe work can prevent water from draining away properly and this can lead to moisture seeping into the brickwork. If this happens, it could cause significant damage to your property. You should also clear the gutters and drains of any debris to allow water to clear away quickly during periods of heavy rain.

Gutter Hedgehogs are a great preventative measure for clogged gutters.

Outdoor plumbing
Cold weather can cause exterior pipe work to freeze and then crack as the weather warms up. Even if the winter hasn't been particularly harsh, you should check that any pipes leading outside flow freely and examine them for any leaks.

Examine the roof
Strong winds and rain can cause damage to your roof, which isn't always obvious until water starts leaking into your upper floors. Take the time to check the roof from ground level to see if any of the tiles have become loose or damaged over the winter. If there are any that are missing, loose or cracked, these need to be replaced as soon as possible to prevent further damage. While you're on the roof, you can check the chimney for damage and examine the flashing around the chimney and any sky lights or vents.

Look at the brickwork
When you're rushing about, you don't always pay attention to the condition of the exterior brickwork. However, any areas of damage can be warning signs of other problems. Walk around your property and look for any indications of issues or sections of cracked brickwork.

Once the weather turns sunnier and warmer, you'll want to spend more time outside enjoying your garden. Therefore, the spring is an excellent opportunity to spruce up these areas and ensure they're ready for use. If you have a decking area then this may need protecting and painting, which will help to prevent rot and keep it looking in good condition. This is also a good time to repair any fences or railings that have become damaged in the winter. Any areas that are missing or loose could be weakened further in a spring storm.

The garden
As well as any patio or decking areas your garden space and lawn also need looking after. Even if you're not particularly green fingered, you can still spend some time tidying it up and ensuring that it looks at its best. Start by removing any debris from your bedding sections and digging up any dead plants. You can then dig over the areas so that they're ready for new seeds and bulbs. Give your lawn its first cut of the season to encourage growth.

You may have areas of your lawn that get a lot of traffic resulting in muddy patches. You may want to create a path using decorative aggregates. Or a simple solution would be to lay stepping stones
