A recent study has found that loads of workers are losing out on money every winter! A lot of this money is being lost due to poor lighting. On average, tradespeople work 37.9 hours in the summer. But, in winter, this fell to 37.2 hours a week. With the average tradespeople earning £544.60 a week, this resulted in a loss of £295.32.

The UK’s average weather in winter is darker (obviously), five and a half hours darker compared to the summer. This means that with more than five hours less to work, tradespeople are missing out on crucial money. Money that could be splashed on a weekend with the lads or a blowing it all on that acca, all because of a lack of lighting. And it’s not the individual workers suffering from a lack of light either. When looking at the industry as a whole, poor lighting is losing the sector a whopping £265 million a year.

“Those working in the construction industry are in demand, with the average hours of work increasing by more than 45 minutes per week over the last decade. But, the UK’s construction businesses have always been restricted in the hours that they work by the weather, with poor weather conditions or light quality having an impact

There is more to it than poor lighting though! The recent outbreak of rubbish weather will have had an effect on the amount that people can have worked. In-fact most people were snowed in for most of the week! Low temperatures, in general, can affect workers and with this year being a cold one it would be no surprise if workers were losing time at work because of it. The winter months are friendly to no-one, bring on the summer and the easy working conditions!
