Workwear Safety Explained

When you are working in areas where there are potential hazards, it’s vital that you wear the correct type of safety clothing. These have been designed to protect you from injury and enable you to carry out your role safely and in comfort. The different types of safety workwear each have their own benefits, depending on the work you’re involved in.

Footwear

Safety-boots

The correct type of footwear can be a major factor in eliminating risk. These boots and shoes offer a range of safety features that can help to reduce the chances of injury. They have non-slip soles to stop accidents occurring in wet conditions, and the steel caps protect your feet from items falling on them. The footwear also has reinforced soles so that you won’t be injured if you step on a nail, screw or other sharp item.

It’s crucial that you don’t forget to protect your hands when working in certain conditions. There are a number of different forms of safety gloves, depending on the environment you’re working in. These include insulated gloves to protect your hands from extremely high temperatures and hot items. Safety gloves also enable you to grip items more securely, as well as preventing injury from sharp objects or chemicals, whilst still enabling you to work in comfort.

High-Visibility Workwear

High-vis

High-visibility clothing enables you to be seen in all conditions, especially if you’re working in an area with moving machinery or on public roads. As well as allowing other road and site users to see you clearly, this clothing offers protection from the elements, so you can work comfortably and securely whatever the weather or light conditions. The type of high-visibility clothing you require will depend on the setting you’re working in. Some roles will just need a vest, whereas other sites will insist your whole body is covered in high-visibility items, including trousers, jackets and hats.

Safety Wear and PPE

PPE

PPE covers a number of safety items, including hats, goggles, ear defenders and respirators.

Eye-protection equipment, such as goggles, will stop chemicals or small particles from getting into your eyes. These can irritate the eye temporarily or cause more permanent damage, including blindness.

Respirators prevent you from inhaling particles, chemicals or gases which cannot be seen. These can cause problems instantly, or the damage could build up over longer periods.

Hearing protection is required when working in extremely noisy conditions. There is the option of full earmuffs or less intrusive earplugs. Whichever you wear, you still need to be able to carry out your tasks, communicate and hear signs of danger.

Hard hats are necessary when there is a risk of items falling from height or there’s the possibility of hitting your head on low or protruding objects.
